主讲人简今/strong>9/span>Dr. Xiangru Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Environmental Engineering Program in School of Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include innovative water and wastewater treatment processes, and emerging contaminant detection, toxicity and control. He serves as an Associate Editor of an Elsevier journal, Chemosphere.

讲座摘要9/span>During chlorine disinfection of drinking water, chlorine may react with natural organic matter (NOM) and bromide in raw water to generate halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Epidemiological studies have shown that human ingestion of chlorinated drinking water containing halogenated DBPs is somewhat related to in-creased spontaneous abortions, stillbirth, birth defects, bladder cancer, and colorectal cancer. To mitigate adverse effects from DBP exposure, granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption has been considered as one of the best available technologies for removing NOM (DBP precursor) in drinking water treatment.
