报告摘要
Genomics knowledge has revolutionized biological sciences particularly those related to forest genetics and tree breeding. El-Kassaby’s talk is a journey starting from early domestication of plants and animals, meandering through conventional plant breeding, and ending with highlighting the role and impact of genomics on forest tree breeding and selection methods. While domestication resulted in the identification of most of the core crops used by mankind, genetics and breeding, along with advances in nutrition and mechanization, undoubtedly resulted in outstanding gains attained by present-day farmers and growers. Genomics present the gateway to untapped potential, yet to be discovered. Examples of the disruptive technology nature of genomics will be presented to illustrate its role as a game changer providing novel opportunities for improved breeding, easier applications, and greater gains.
